Government Senator, Kerensia Morrison, is supporting a recommendation by Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck for the law to prescribe sanctions for owners whose dogs attack and seriously injure other people.
Minister Chuck made the suggestion earlier this week following an incident in which a teacher was attacked and badly hurt by pit bulls.
Senator Morrison addressed the Upper House of Parliament today on the motion for adjournment and supported Minister Chuck.
Senator Morrison says it’s time to send a message to dog owners that they should exercise due care over their animals.
In the meantime, Opposition Senate Leader, Donna Scott Mottley, is also supporting the recommendation for legal sanctions to be applied to the owners of dogs that hurt others.
Senator Scott Mottley also called for the enforcement of a ban on the importation of certain types of vicious dogs.
The Opposition Senator told the Senate that in the past she’s heard Ministers in former JLP-administrations speak out strongly against owners whose dogs injure people but no action was taken.
