The stepfather accused of beating four-year-old, Nashawn Brown, who later died, was remanded when he was brought before the St. Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday.

Twenty-four-year-old Shaun Bennett of Willowdene in Spanish Town is booked to return to court on Thursday, July 29, when the matter will again be mentioned.

Bennett is charged with Unlawful Wounding, Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, Cruelty to Child, and Child Abuse.

His lawyer, Lynden Wellesley, is expected to make another application for bail when he next appears.

Wellesley applied for bail but was told by Parish Judge, Opal Smith, that another address was required before the request could be considered.

Wellesley agreed and told the court that he would renew the application on the next mentioned date.

Reports are that on Sunday, July 18, Nashawn complained of not feeling well and was given a meal by his mother.

His stepfather became angry and proceeded to beat him with a stick after complaining that Nashawn was eating slowly.

Nashawn’s mother reportedly tried to intervened and was also physically assaulted

Shortly after, the child reportedly went to the bathroom but became unresponsive.

Nashawn was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The mother was admitted to hospital and received treatment for injuries she sustained in the attack.
