Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the teacher at the centre of an incident in which she threatened to murder a student needs an intervention.

The controversial tirade by the teacher unfolded at the Pembroke Hall High School in St. Andrew and was caught on a video.

The incident has re-invigorated national debate about the state of the country’s education sector.

Prime Minister Holness says issues of accountability and regulation of teachers are among the issues preventing an upgrade of the Education Regulations of 1980.

He says that’s the reason the government will construct six science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM, schools starting next year.

The Prime Minister is also defending the move to not subject the STEM schools to the tenets of the existing Education Regulations.
