In the United States, the founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia, Stewart Rhodes, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, after being convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in the January 6 attack on Congress.

Prosecutors had asked the judge for a 25-year term.

Before handing down the sentence, US district judge, Amit Mehta, told a defiant Rhodes that he posed a continued threat to the US government, saying it was clear he wanted democracy in the country to devolve into violence.

Rhodes was combative at his sentencing hearing, telling the court that his prosecution was politically motivated.
