Chief Justice Brian Sykes, says over the past four years significant progress has been made in disposing of matters within the same year they are brought before the courts.

He says the Parish Courts have maintained an over 83% annual clear-up rate.

Justice Sykes was speaking at the Annual Judiciary Assize Service at the Webster Memorial United Church yesterday.

He says while great attention is spent on the significant backlog of cases not as much is given to the attempts to ensure this backlog does not grow.

However, the Chief Justice says the Gun Court itself should clear its backlog by June of next year.

Justice Sykes says significant gains have also been made at the court of appeals and the justice system overall.
