National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, says the Police High Command is moving to respond to a spike in violent crime in some sections of the Corporate Area – including the East Kingston and the Kingston Central divisions.
Minister Chang says Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson, is making changes to respond to the violence.
Minister Chang was addressing the House of Representatives yesterday.
The Security Minister was responding to concerns from East Kingston Member of Parliament, Phillip Paulwell.
Mr. Paulwell told the House that residents in his constituency – in particular the Rockfort area, are panicking.
He urged the security forces to implement special measures to respond to what he described as a reign of terror.
Recent statistics from the Police show that murders have increased by 31-per cent in East Kingston.
Mr. Paulwell told the House that shootings in the constituency have increased by a massive 450%.
The Police statistics also show that murders in the Kingston Central Police Division are up by 87% this year.
The increase in the Kingston Central Division follows a 40-per cent decline in murders in the Division last year when the area was under a State of Public Emergency.
