The police are expected to question mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas this afternoon in connection with investigations into allegations of assault at a Portmore parish consultation meeting in February.
The mayor’s attorney, Anthony Williams told Nationwide News the questioning is set to get underway at 3:30 pm. It’s further understood that the Portmore mayor could face criminal charges.
A video shared widely on social media, showing Mayor Thomas appearing to lunge at a woman and rip a placard from her hands at the meeting, forms part of the police investigation.
On his way to confronting the woman, Mayor Thomas appeared to barge another female with his shoulder, causing her to stumble. It’s understood both women suffered injuries during the fracas.
It’s understood that a third alleged physical confrontation between Mayor Thomas and a woman at the meeting also has the attention of the police.
Mayor Thomas’ attorney says the allegations against his client are baseless.
Mayor Thomas previously admitted to removing placards from the hands of some attendees at the meeting but said he did so to restore order and de-escalate what he described as a volatile situation.
