State Minister in the Mining Ministry, Julian Robinson, is leading a team of government officials on a tour of a section of the Cockpit Country, where mining are alleged to have been taking place.

Minister Robinson is being joined on the tour by representatives of the National Environment and Planning Agency, the office of the Commissioner of Mines and the Jamaica Bauxite Institute.

The tour will allow the officials to determine whether the Noranda Bauxite Company is undertaking mining activities within the Cockpit Country Protected Area.

Noranda released a statement yesterday saying its activities were being undertaken according to the mining permit granted to them by the government.

The Jamaica Environment Trust and the Windsor Research Centre raised an alarm on Monday that mining activities were indeed being undertaken in the Protected Area.

Pictures were circulated showing workmen using heavy equipment to clear a path through a section of land which the environmental stakeholders claim was inside the Cockpit Country.
