The Meteorological Service says a Severe Weather Alert remains in effect for Jamaica today.

In its latest bulletin, the Met Service says the Tropical Wave has the potential to develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next day or two.

It says unstable weather conditions are expected to spread south of Jamaica within the next 36 to 48 hours as the system moves westward.

Fishers on the cays and banks are still advised to evacuate immediately and start returning to the mainland.

Other small craft operators are also advised to return to port and small craft operators who are in port are advised not to venture out.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are likely to affect the Windward Islands, northern Venezuela, and the Dutch ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao today.

It says these impacts are likely to spread to northeastern Colombia later this evening.
