The Meteorological Service of Jamaica’s severe weather alert is expected to remain in effect until 5:00 this afternoon.
The severe weather alert that was issued yesterday is due to the expected impact of a tropical depression.
According to the release the system was a tropical wave developing close to the island.
However, the U.S. National Hurricane Center now says the tropical wave has developed into a tropical depression that might become a tropical storm later today.
The next name on the list is Iota.
Orlando Sentinel out of Florida says at 10 am tropical depression 31 that could become tropical storm Iota was located about 310 miles south-southeast of Kingston with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph moving west-southwest at 7 mph.
The system is expected to move across the central Caribbean Sea during the next day or so, and approach the coasts of Nicaragua and northeastern Honduras late Sunday and Monday.
