Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Environment Trust, JET, Dr. Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, says the long-awaited world oceans protection treaty is a step in the right direction.

Her comments follow a historic agreement among nearly 200 UN Member states to safeguard marine life in international waters.

The High Seas Treaty follows almost 20 years of talks and aims to conserve at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030.

Dr. Moodie says the treaty will significantly benefit Jamaica’s fishing industry.

She says while there are some loopholes in the treaty, decision can be made to get the relevant countries on board.
