More than 11,000 undocumented Jamaicans are set to benefit from the provision of free birth certificates as part of a new project initiated by the government.

The disclosure was made by Minister Without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, Floyd Green.

The project, named Operation Birthright, will fall under the National Identification System, NIDS.

To be eligible Jamaicans must take home less than 37-thousand dollars per month in their household income.

Minister Green says most undocumented Jamaicans don’t recognize the need for birth certificates until they have to interact with government agencies.

Minister Green says Members of Parliament have been engaged to provide the names of 60 eligible citizens in their constituencies.

He says the 50 million dollar project is expected to roll out in July this year.

The Minister added that over 2 million records of civil registration will soon be digitised.
