Deputy Prime Minister and National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, says within the next two weeks the government will be in possession of a clear legal opinion on the future use of States of Public Emergency.

Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson says several persons who were released after the special security measures across the island came to an end, have resurfaced on the JCF’s radar for criminal offences.

Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that the detention of five men under the States of Public Emergency was unconstitutional.

Dr. Chang says the government is currently detained by more than just appealing the landmark Supreme Court ruling.

Dr. Chang says the special security measure is an effective tool used by the security forces to clamp down on major crimes.

He adds that declaring a State of Public Emergency remains an option for the Holness administration.

The National Security Minister also sought to reiterate that the security forces acted on intelligence from credible sources about persons who were detained under the States of Public Emergency.
