Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, has called for investment in the human capital of small island developing states, amid the fallout in the labour market caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Prime Minister made the call while addressing a high-level United Nations Event on Jobs and Social Protection for Poverty Eradication.
Mr. Holness says the pandemic has highlighted the need for investment in human capital to better prepare for changes in the global economy.
Mr. Holness and Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, have been asked by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, to lead in the area of financing for development.
Prime Minister Holness called on international leaders to address what he says is the inequality and gaps in social protection programmes across the world.
Mr. Holness says the pandemic has highlighted the need for bold action to address these challenges.
Mr. Holness told the UN meeting that as economies transition to more climate-friendly jobs, there is a need to ensure there is a robust social protection system in small island developing states.
