Jamaica Teachers Association President, Jasford Gabriel, is describing as a knee jerk reaction, plans by the Education Ministry to extend the school year.
He was reacting to the announcement by Education Minister, Fayval Williams, that the government is exploring plans to extend the school year into the Summer months.
Mr. Gabriel says teachers are adamant the idea would be counterproductive.
He says there’s need for a conversation about the relevance of the curriculum.
He says teachers are suffering from physical and mental illness due to excessive on screen hours.
Mr Gabriel says many teachers spend up to 12 hours on screen time per day.
