Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy, says the government should’ve used emergency procurement to complete the rehabilitation work for the  Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.

Dr. Guy says the government’s procurement issues have been shown to be onerous and lengthy.

He was speaking on This Morning with Wayne Walker and Danielle Archer.

Dr. Guy says Emergency Procurement would’ve allowed them to cut through the red tape.

Rehabilitation work on the hospital commenced in 2017 to address mold and air quality issues at the facility.

The renovation work was scheduled to end in late 2020.

However, the pandemic and onerous government procurement guidelines have contributed to delays in the completion of works being carried out at the hospital.

Noting that the expenditure so far is significant, the opposition spokesman stressed that since his last visit in December of 2019 very little progress has been made.

The Opposition Spokesman also continues to rubbish suggestions that the expertise to rehabilitate the hospital does not exist in Jamaica.
