There is a demand for the resignation of Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton.

The call came in a statement on Thursday under the signature of PNP General Secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell, saying Dr. Tufton has failed the nation.

In an interview with our news centre, Dr. Campbell says there was some breach of care and Minister Tufton should offer his resignation.

Stevian Simmonds reports.

According to Dr. Campbell, several months after Jamaica recorded its first Covid-19 case, there is still no proper Covid-19 Management Plan.

He’s accusing the minister of poor planning, which he says resulted in the recent oxygen shortage at several hospitals across the island.

Dr. Campbell says this crisis was avoidable.

He says if Minister Tufton fails to resign, the Prime Minister should remove him.

Dr. Tufton has sought to clarify and even refuted IGL’s claims the Ministry failed to provide a forecast of the spike in Covid-19 cases and the needs of oxygen which would accompany that.

But Dr. Campbell says he has no doubt in the claims of the gas company.

According to Dr. Campbell, many of the over 1,500 deaths related to Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, could have been prevented.

This he says if the government had put in place proper measures to lower the number of cases, enhance healthcare infrastructure and mitigate some of the effects of the virus.

He says recommendations for fever clinics, home and early Covid management protocols have fallen on deaf ears.
